Home >> Programmes>> Women Empowerment Programmes

CHARDEP has been working in line with its objective of Women empowerment since the time of inception. The organisation believes in holistic empowerment rather than part impacts. The term "Empowerment" will be effective only if measures are taken to ensure that women feel empowered in all fronts namely economic, social and to a large extent in terms of their role in the family especially in the rural context. The purpose of SELF HELP GROUPS is to ensure that the women are guided in this path towrds independence and empowerment.

CHARDEP has formed around 1500 Self Help Groups under its banner and is one of the affiliates accredited by the ‘Mahalir Thittam’ scheme of the Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation.

The women in the groups are also given training ranging from basic functionalities in a group to Entrepreneurial skill Development with support from District Rural Development Authority (DRDA), National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). Women Entrepreneurship has been actively promoted by obtaining economic assistance form various nationalized as well as private banks.

CHARDEP views Self Help Groups not just as a means to create economic independence among rural women but also as a tool to enhance literacy among rural women, inculcate social responsibilities among them, promote civic participation so so that they play a very important role in the development and progress of the society. This will surely have a huge impact on the development of the nation at large. All the staff are trained on the technical aspects of these areas and are also given responsibility to ensure that these messages are delivered during all the weekly meetings of the groups.
