The ministry of textiles, Government of India funded CHARDEP to implement a project for Bamboo and Cane artisans at Sencottai area of Thirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu. This project aims at uplifting the status of these artisans by helping them to develop their skills with modern tools and technologies, helping them to market their products in an effective way.


This was achieved by forming Self Help groups among Artisans, training them on various aspects ranging from skill training to entrepreneurship development.This project mostly helpful for rural people. They were also linked with the bank to avail loans to further develop their art.They were also formed in to groups which were registered as Self Help Groups.


This project was started in 2010 at Sencottai area. CHARDEP was asked to conduct a baseline survey with the artisans in order to identify the potential areas of intervention and also to chart out an action plan according to the needs of the artisans. They were also formed in to groups which were registered as Self Help Groups.
